How to Make and Achieve Realistic New Year’s Resolutions

The arrival of 2013 is upon us, and with the start of a new year, it’s always a good idea to make some New Year’s resolutions to get January started off right at your small business. While New Year’s resolutions are typically made with the best of intentions, it’s easy to get carried away with fantastically grand ideas, but are yet somewhat unrealistic, and consequently fade away by February.

Make 2013 the year you stick to your small business New Year’s resolutions by taking the time to plan out reasonable goals for your company. Take the following factors into consideration when deciding what you’d like to improve next year:

Be Reasonable

As a small business owner, you want your company to succeed. It’s easy to dream big and set goals that are out of reach, but this isn’t really a good idea. There’s a fine line between being ambitious and unreasonable. If you set goals mirroring the latter it’s easy to get discouraged. For example, a realistic goal might be to increase profits by 15% next year, while an unrealistic one would probably be to triple your profits.

Create a Plan

Your small business New Year’s resolutions won’t be achieved until you take the initiative to make it happen. Create a step-by-step approach of how you plan to attain your goals and the resources you’ll need to do so. Include deadlines for completing specific steps, to keep your plan in action and provide you with a guideline of when you should be doing certain steps. Include a method to measure results along the way, so you can see your progress and use the results as motivation to continue your hard work.

Delegate

Completing your small business New Year’s resolutions can take a lot of extra time, in addition to your normal workload, so let your employees help out. Delegate specific tasks out to your staff, so you don’t become overwhelmed. Spreading duties out among your staff and working will likely help you to reach your goal in a more efficient manner, as you can assign tasks according to each person’s area of expertise.

Follow-Up

Hold employees accountable for their assigned tasks, just as you would with everyday work.  Organize regular meetings to get progress reports and to make sure everyone is doing their part. Any small business can make New Year’s resolutions, but only the most dedicated are able to accomplish them.

If possible, it’s a good idea to come up with your small business New Year’s resolutions, and your plan of action, to achieve them by the end of the year. This way, you can get to work at the very beginning of January, leaving you plenty of time to accomplish everything your list.
